The kitchen is filled with noise—eggs cracking, metal spatulas scrapping, batter whisking, sausage roasting, pancakes grilling, and volunteers chatting. Some people take to cooking the eggs while others tackle the pancake batter. Still other volunteers begin moving the food into heating tins while others finish up grilling the sausage. The kitchen is abuzz with conversations and good food. What is all the murmur about? Serving others! About 200 others to be precise. After all the food is cooked with care, volunteers  hand delivered plated meals to those waiting nearby. The Fifth Street Hall (709 5th Street NW) in Grand Rapids was buzzing with activity. Volunteers from the American Red Cross of Greater Grand Rapids and Griffin Properties spent an evening cooking and serving over 200 people from the surrounding community. Many of the attendees are homeless, low-income, or just in need of a good, hot dinner. This meal is a weekly Wednesday occurrence sponsored by the Stockbridge Boiler Room and rotating volunteer groups.
